From looking at all the places we visit on our small group tours of Ireland, we compiled the 5 best places to shop. Leave some space in that suitcase and discover our little piece of shopping heaven!
1. Dingle
If you visit Dingle on any of our southwestern tours, you'll have the opportunity to spend the whole day exploring this fascinating town. With so much to see there, we had to narrow down our three favourite spots.
a) Dingle Crystal - Handcrafted in Dingle by master craftsman Sean Daly. You can watch the master himself at work. His work is heavily influences by Celtic design, particularly Celtic knots and circles.
b) Brain de Stack Jewelers - Another popular spot is local award winning jeweler, Brain de Stack. Renowned for his handmade jewellery, that incorporates ancient Celtic elements such as Ogham writing. His pendants, rings and broaches are most definitely miniature works of art.
c) Louis Mulcahy Pottery - As the New York Times put it One of Irelands most original and compelling artists. Louis Mulcahy pottery shows devotion to quality. Known for his large pots and rich, lively, lustrous glazes. The pots themselves are actual quite durable.
2. Kenmare Farmers Market
If you happen to be passing through Kenmare on a Wednesday, be sure to visit the Farmers Market. Open from 10am-4pm in the town square. Youll find all sorts of artisan goodies there, from locally produced food and crafts to antique bric a brac.
3. Woollen Mills in Blarney
One of the first stopovers on many of ours tours is Blarney. Better known for the Blarney Castle, but most definitely another must see in the town, is the Blarney Woollen Mill. The mill stocks the famous Aran sweater. The sweeter originated in the Aran islands, where it was worn by generations of fishermen to keep them warm against the cold Atlantic wind. There is also a range of other gifts in store, from Irish linen and lace cloths, to Waterford crystal and Celtic jewellery among others.
4. Galway City
If stopping off in Galway, make sure you take a stroll down Shop Street in Galway where you will come across a wide variety of shops. Ranging from high street to specialty stores selling souvenirs. While there why not grab a coffee or a pint and do some people watching from one of the many pubs and cafes along the street? The weekly Saturday market in Galway is a feast for the senses. Discover a wonderful selection of goods for amazing value. Mingle with the locals and enjoy the boisterous atmosphere.
5. Avoca Hand Weavers, Molls Gap - Ring of Kerry
Set high up on a rocky ridge. Avoca boasts a fabulous view of mountains and lakes. Besides the scenery, Avoca Hand Weavers carries an amazing range of gifts, lambs wool throws and scarves, home wares, glass jewellery and ceramics and of course delicious food. The food consists of a wide range of fresh tasty salads, wholesome hot dishes and delicious home-baked goods.
