Located in the heart of West Cork , at the source of the river Lee, Gougane Barra is a poetic landscape, where better to get your wellies on, breathe in good mountain air and experience farming first-hand.
Neil Lucey and his family have been farming the land for generations, he knows every nook and cranny like the back of his hand, Neil is known to recite the place names of the valley as Gaeilge( Irish) whilst standing on the side of Derreenacusha bringing the land to life!
It is such a perfectly choreographed experience to watch the dogs at work. They are tuned into every whistle and instruction by the farmer as they gather the – sometimes anarchic – sheep. The whole process of shearing sheep and how the wool is transformed – through weaving and carding– in to beautiful Aran sweaters with their intricate patterns, can seem mysterious and magical when standing on the edge of a sheep-pen, with the farmer wielding his shears.
